| Property: | A recently-restored Victorian mansion (one of the last in Hawaii), and its 1910 guesthouse, set on 5 1/2 acres of lush gardens and untouched jungle, just 5 blocks from downtown Hilo. National Register. | Aloha! Experience the
gracious, unpretentious hospitality of Old Hawaii with an old Island family.
In 1993, the Shipmans' great-granddaughter and her husband returned to Hilo to purchase and renovate the family home. Gary and Barbara continue the Shipman tradition of old Hawaiian hospitality as they invite you to their historic home and guesthouse, sharing memories and family anecdotes with you. Bathe in oversized tubs. Play the same piano Hawaii's last queen, Lili`uokalani, played. Walk on honey-colored fir floors under 12-foot ceilings. Read the travel books of a century ago. Gaze through curved windows of hand-rolled glass. Fall asleep on a porch rocker. Stroll to town, taking in the historic district, art galleries, antique shops and Lyman House Museum. Buy an armful of tropical flowers at the farmers' market...and get change. Walk a bit farther, past the Kamehameha statue to the morning fish auction and the Lili`uokalani Gardens.
Hilo town...a most uncommercial place to visit. Stay here with a kama`aina family. This is "Old Hawaii". Aloha, Barbara and Gary
