Hale Makamae Bed & Breakfast is located in the beautiful and tropical area of Puna on the Big Island of Hawaii, 30 minutes from Hilo (International Airport) and the Volcanoes National Park, 5 minutes to Pahoa in Leilani Estates. The peaceful atmosphere, the lush tropical gardens and the comfort of our suites will make your stay a wonderful experience.
Our Hawaii Bed and Breakfast is only minutes away from new lava plunging into the ocean, thermally heated hot ponds (Ahalanui Park), beautiful coastal parks (MacKenzie Park, Isaac Hale Park), Kapoho tidepools for snorkeling, Lava Tree Park, Kehena Black Sand Beach, old Kalapana (covered by lava in 1990) and steam vents in an area full of history. The charming town of Pahoa is only 3 miles away and offers a selection of very good restaurants, stores, and galleries. Hilo, the island's capital still has its south-pacific ambience with historic buildings and beautiful views of Mauna Kea and Hilo Bay.
Besides English, we also speak German. Both of us have traveled to many countries and we are now happy to share the beauty of this island and the comfort of our home with you.

- East side of the Big Island of Hawaii, 10 minutes to active lava flow, 30 minutes to the Volcanoes National Park, 30 minutes to Hilo and the International Airport, 5 minutes to Pahoa, in Leilani Estates off Hwy. 130
- Rooms/Suites
- Two suites with living room/dining room and kitchenette; one studio; all with separate entrances and private bathrooms. The kitchenettes in our larger suites are equipped with stove tops, microwave, refrigerator, toaster oven, toaster, coffee maker, dishes and more. All rooms have ceiling fans, walk-in closets and great air circulation.
Lanai Suite - is located on the second floor, bedroom, living room and the balcony are overlooking the garden. The dining area, the kitchnette and the seating area with Satellite TV are part of the living room. The master bedroom (king size bed), the second bedroom (queen size bed) and the living room (full size futon couch) are well suited to accommodate groups/families of up to 5 persons.
Garden Suite - is located on the first floor with its entrance and living room looking out into the garden. The suite offers a kitchenette, dining/living room area, and a separate bedroom with a king size bed. The apartment is perfect for a couple. To accommodate a third person a single bed can be moved into the living room. Because of its first floor location the suite is easily accessible.
Makamae Studio - is located on the first floor with view and entrance into the garden. The studio is a cozy room for one or two persons. It has a king size bed and offers a little coffee/tea station. - Rates
- From $95/night to $150/night (double occupancy), $20/night for each additional guest, children under 12 are free of charge.
Weekly rates: Stay for 7 and only pay for 6 nights
All rates are subject to State (4.166%) and Hotel Room Tax (9.25%) - Breakfast
- Our Gourmet Island Breakfast is included in our rates and is served in our breezeway every morning with a variety of tropical fruits, cheeses, meats, pan cakes, french toast, eggs, different types of bread, cereals and your choice of Kona coffee, teas and juice.
- Facilities
- All three suites look into the beautifully landscaped garden; The Garden Suite and the Makamae Studio are easily accessible with their first floor location. The Lanai Suite is on the second floor with a balcony overlooking our garden. Patios, porches and the lanai with lawn chairs, outdoor furniture and a gas BBQ grill are there for our guests to enjoy the tranquility of nature or a starry tropical night. All our suites and our breezeway, where breakfast is served, are decorated with tropical flowers and orchids.
WiFi internet access is available in the breezeway - breakfast area.
Guide books and information about the island and Hawaii are available and we can give you many suggestions on what to do and where to go. - Amenities

Private Lanai Queen Bed - Payment & Cancellation Policies
- To complete your reservation we require a 50% deposit with a minimum of $100. The balance is due at check-in and is non-refundable for an early check-out, unless rooms can be re-booked.
Payments can be made by Credit Card (Visa, Master, Discover), Traveler's Checks, Money Order or personal checks (US Bank) for your reservation. Checks should be made out to "Hale Makamae Bed & Breakfast". The remainder of your balance can also be paid in cash once you are here. Please, be advised that all payments have to be made in US currency.
From December 20 - January 5 (Winter holidays) we have a three-night minimum stay on all suites. During the Merrie Monarch Festival in March/April there is a four-night minimum stay on all suites. Deposit for your Winter holiday reservations is non-refundable after September 30. Deposits for Merrie Monarch reservations are non-refundable after February 1.
We generally have a two-night minimum stay policy. For one-night arrangements in the Makamae Studio and Garden Suite a surcharge of $20 and for the Lanai Suite of $30 will be added.
Should you have to cancel your reservation we will refund your deposit, if the cancellation was made at least 30 days prior to your planned arrival.
